Are you ready for The Coach? Ready to become a better person? Fitter, smarter, happier? Yes? Brilliant! No? Brilliant too! Well, he’ll keep sharing his motivational quotes with you, complete with sweeping arm gestures and a Tell Sell-smile, until you finally say yes. Because he reckons you need him. And actually, you reckon so too. Because, yes, he’s in-your-face, loud and pushy. But to be fair: his enthusiasm is infectious. And he suddenly makes New Year’s resolutions seem entirely achievable with a well-thought-out plan. He knows no self-doubt: if you do exactly what The Coach says, you’ll suddenly achieve all your goals. So we’ll ask one more time: are you ready for The Coach?
Superpowers
- Always enthusiastic and positive, but firm and reflective when necessary.
- Helps people actually achieve both major and minor goals.
- Adds something to your end-user’s life.
Kryptonite
- He can be so pushy and meddlesome that you end up hating him.
- Exhausting: keeps nagging you until you’ve achieved your goal.
- Can make you feel like a failure if he goes too far.
The Coach in practice
If you let The Coach into your life, you’ll hear from him from early in the morning until late at night. He’ll let you know how you’ve slept, check your fitness goals, steps and heart rate on your smartwatch, and display all your to-do lists in apps such as Evernote or Todoist. He’s also happy to give you a nudge when it’s time to get up from your desk for a bit, or when it’s time for your new Chinese lesson on Duolingo or your new masterclass on Goodhabitz.
Archenemy
The Butler and the Robot: they really do make everything far too easy for you. No pain, no gain, right?
Ally
The Cashier, for her part, gives The Coach a good cheer: after all, gurus bring in the cash. Together with The Artist and The Cupid, he forms a notorious trio that can make your customer completely hooked on your product or service.
Summary
We all need someone now and then to give us a lift and guide us. The Coach not only promises your end user the moon, he also helps to move mountains. But do make sure he doesn’t become too overbearing, otherwise you’ll just see him as a mountain to climb.
